THE
STORY BEHIND THE TRAGEDY…in a world of instant news and
connectivity, a silent tragedy is taking place. The twin epidemics, HIV
and AIDS – are now taking their human toll in a world that has avoided
facing or understanding the scale of the impact of HIV/AIDS upon children.
The
HIV epidemic is a silent emergency and its invisibility has given rise
to some false hope that tragedy could be averted. However, children
are now being orphaned on a scale unrivalled in world history.
Reliable
sources estimate that by 2010 there will be over 44 million orphans in
the sub-Saharan, Asian, Latin American and Caribbean countries alone, 30
million of them orphaned by the AIDS pandemic.
WomenAid,
with your help this Christmas and holiday period, can help over 7000 of
the heroic widows in Uganda who have formed an association to care for
the orphans. Each widow is attempting to look after, on average, seven
orphans.
The
WomenAid team in Georgia are working hard to provide assistance to orphans
whose lives are unbelievably bleak as they struggle to survive in sub-zero
temperatures with very little electricity water and food. Your help
will give comfort
